Steelwork contractor Caunton Engineering has won the Nottinghamshire Company of the Year for 2008. The award citation recognised that company turnover is at a record level, training and employee benefits are exemplary, and that investment in engineering and manufacturing is progressive.

The BCSA and the Welding & Joining Society are hosting a joint workshop entitled ‘Welding coordination requirements for structural fabrication’ in Leeds on 4 December 2008. The event will address the difficulty that UK fabricators may have in complying with the Construction Products Directive and proposed new European standards. Billington Structures has designed, fabricated and erected steel frames for a number of buildings in Project SLAM – the Ministry of Defence’s programme of single living accommodation modernisation. To date, Billington has been involved in construction at around 40 sites in the UK, with projects ranging in size from 60t to 700t.

BCSA has donated a number of steel construction films to the National Archive at the British Film Institute. The films are: Character of Steel; The Fabrication of Steelwork; Build Yourself a World; British Steelwork Spans the World; A Job for a Man; Framed in Steel; Steel – the Secret; Specify Steel; The New Neighbour.

Structural Metal Decks has strengthened its existing management structure by promoting Ben Pratten to Commercial Director, Dan Williams to Construction Director and Jamie Turner to Technical Director. The company said the change will enable it to offer director level service for all aspects of the business, reinforcing its objective of delivering projects to the total satisfaction of clients.
