Halifax Building Society Headquarters

The largest building society in the world is now building its new headquarters in Halifax and steel is playing an interesting part in its construction.

The building is on a sloping site and the main floors are raised on a podium. Although the office accommodation for 700 people is built in reinforced concrete the entire section sits on a steel sub-frame. The girders are approximately 14ft deep and 300ft long. The third floor (lower of the two raised floors) is an open plan office for 550 while the fourth floor contains board and directors suites.
