Upgraded bus station provides transport boost for Kingston
Transport for London (TfL) is nearing completion of its redevelopment work to provide a state-of-the-art bus station in Kingston upon Thames.
The project involves the construction of two pavilions which include waiting rooms and facilities for staff, topped and connected by a canopy that provides all-weather protection for passengers at the 12 bus stops.
Structural steelwork is the chosen material for the scheme as the canopy is formed with weathering steel plate with diamond-shaped openings, supported by curved cruciform columns.
Other features of the new bus station will include improved real time travel information screens, fully accessible customer toilets, improved LED lighting and CCTV, a new PA system and retail units.
Working on behalf of the main contractor, Briton Fabricators is erecting the project’s steelwork.
Louise Cheeseman, TfL’s Director of Buses, said: “We’re determined to make it even easier to use public transport in the capital and our work to transform Cromwell Road bus station is a key part of our plans to strengthen the network in Kingston.”
