Trial assembly for River Trent footbridge
Due to be lifted into its final position across the River Trent in the autumn, the new Waterside Bridge has been trial erected at the steelwork contractor’s facility.
The new pedestrian and cycle bridge – the first to be built in Nottingham since the 1950s – will link the Trent Basin community on the north bank, where 350 homes are being built, with sports facilities to the south.
Working on behalf of main contractor Balfour Beatty, Briton Fabricators has used 175t of steelwork to trial-assemble the bridge at its Hucknall factory.
Measuring 87m-long x 3.5m-wide, the arched bridge has a maximum height of 20m.
Briton Fabricators Managing Director Dean Morcom said: “The steel structure will soon start to be dismantled and sent away for painting and protective treatment.
“Once that is complete, the bridge will be delivered to site in sections and reassembled.”
Using one of the world’s largest crawler cranes, the complete Waterside Bridge is due to be lifted into place in November.
