Top prizes for BCSA members at Tekla Awards 2024
Five of this year’s six Tekla Awards were awarded to projects involving British Constructional Steelwork Association (BCSA) members.
William Hare collected two awards, as Public Vote winner and Public Projects winner. The former was for 40 Leadenhall Street [1], which the judges said was impressive because of its sheer scale.
The 34-storey City of London tower was designed using BIM to create numerous complex curved structural steel elements. The result, is said to be a building that transforms the capital’s skyline.
The Public Project’s winning project was Maggie’s at The Royal Free Hospital in north London [2].
Commenting on the job, William Hare Bid Manager Sian Gilbertson, said: “BIM was instrumental for the delivery of this project due to the complex geometry.”
The redevelopment of Olympia [3], one of London’s oldest exhibition venues, won the Commercial Projects award. Working on behalf of Laing O’Rourke, BHC fabricated, supplied and erected 18,100t of steelwork for this huge scheme.
BHC BIM Coordinator Aaron Courtney, said: “This project had so many challenges and BHC are very proud of it. To put it simply, it would not have been success without Tekla.”
The Industrial Projects winner was Skelton Grange Energy-from-Waste scheme near Leeds [4]. Billington Structures erected 3,000t of steelwork for this job.
The re-tracking of Thorpe Park’s Colossus rollercoaster [5] won the Small Projects award. Taziker Industrial were the steel contractor tasked with the complex job of replacing a pivotal section of the ride’s track.
