Steel rises for Norfolk special needs school
Structural steelwork is nearing completion for the new Fred Nicholson School in Swaffham, Norfolk.
The school provides a nurturing and inclusive environment for children and young people, aged five to 16 with special educational needs and disabilities.
The relocation from its current site in Dereham is part of Norfolk County Council’s multi-million-pound Local First Inclusion (LFI) programme. This move will increase the number of pupils from 173 to 225.
Working on behalf of main contractor R.G. Carter, SDM Fabrication is fabricating, supplying, and erecting 392t of steelwork for the project.
Councillor Penny Carpenter, Cabinet Member for Children’s Services at Norfolk County Council, said: “Relocating Fred Nicholson School allows us to address the growing demand for specialised education and support services, ensuring that every child in Norfolk can flourish.”
The new site covers approximately 3.2 hectares and features a three-storey building with 17 main classrooms, providing comprehensive special school education and dedicated areas for sixth form and Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) provision. The school will also include specialised classrooms for science, creative arts, music and drama, food technology, textiles and life skills.
