Businesses urge government to support the UK steel industry’s net zero transition

Posted on by in News

Some of the UK’s largest steel users (members of SteelZero) have called on the new government to support their steel industry’s decarbonisation with a clear industrial strategy.

In a letter to Sarah Jones MP, Minister of State for Industry and Decarbonisation, businesses operating in the UK offered to work with the Minister to prioritise action that will support the long-term success of the UK steel industry.

The businesses, which include Barrett Steel, urgently called on the government to develop an industrial strategy with sustainability and the rapid deployment of green technology at its core; to establish clear definitions for lower emission and net zero steel, to support investment decisions and policy development; and to implement public procurement rules to require the use of green steel in its purchased goods and services.

Tony Corrie, Group Commercial Director at Barrett Steel, said: “We see rising demand for low embodied carbon steel as industries aim to cut emissions. With consumer and investor pressure to meet climate targets, the steel industry is at a pivotal moment.

“Embracing net zero steel production supports our sustainability goals and offers a competitive edge. Collaboration with the government is crucial to accelerate the shift to lower emission steel and encourage green infrastructure investment.”

The SteelZero initiative, run by Climate Group, brings together over 40 steel buyers to speed up the transition to a net zero steel industry. The membership covers businesses operating across the economy in sectors such as construction, renewable energy, automotive and consumer goods.
