Steelwork contractor confirmed for major Edinburgh retail redevelopment

BHC has been appointed by Laing O’Rourke as the structural steelwork contractor for its extensive redevelopment of the Edinburgh St James Centre.

BHC said it is delighted to announce its involvement and it will be responsible for the supply, fabrication and erection of approximately 15,000t of structural steelwork over a period of two years.

Throughout the duration of the project BHC said it will employ approximately 20 apprentices.

Said to be one of the largest investments in Scotland, the 158,000m² development will see the former 1970s shopping centre replaced with 78,000m² of retail space, anchored by John Lewis, a multi-screen cinema, the luxurious W Hotel comprising of over 200 rooms, and 150 private residential apartments.

The new development will be the Scottish capital’s prime shopping destination and new heart of the city, linking with and expanding the existing retail pitch of George Street, Princes Street and Multrees Walk.

Construction started in 2016, with completion due in 2020.
