Steel support for Devon mining industry
More than 200t of steelwork has been galvanized for a multi-million pound mining operation in Devon.
South West Galvanizers (part of the Wedge Group) has galvanized the steelwork for Wolf Minerals’ new £130M Drakelands Tungsten and Tin Mine, at Hemerdon on the outskirts of Dartmoor.
The steelwork was used to form conveyors in the mine’s distribution network, needed to transport materials to various areas of the process plant. It was also used to construct bulk materials handling equipment, platework, and chute installations.
When the new mine enters production this summer it will produce around 3,500t of tungsten per year, equivalent to about 3.5% of forecast global demand.
General Manager at South West Galvanizers Tony Wonnacott said: “We were delighted to support a long-standing customer on this prestigious project, particularly one that is set to employ so many local people, utilise the services of local companies, and significantly benefit Devon’s economy.”
