Steel sector supports Grenfell Tower DIY SOS project

One year after the devastating Grenfell Tower fire, the steel sector has played its part in the BBC’s DIY SOS: The Big Build project to rebuild a community hub and boxing club which were both destroyed in the blaze.

Tata Steel donated structural floor, roof and wall systems as well as technical expertise, while specialist metal decking contractor Composite Profiles supplied the on-site installation expertise.

Located underneath the A40, just meters away from the derelict Grenfell Tower, the new Dale Youth Boxing Academy and multi-use North Kensington Community Centre, will be used by the affected local community for a range of activities including support through a counselling and rehabilitation programme.

Kamal Rajput, Business Development Manager at Tata Steel, said: “As soon as we heard what the BBC was aiming to do we wanted to get involved. The Grenfell Tower tragedy touched all of us and we wanted to help in whatever way we could.

“The project had extremely tight deadlines, with the design stage beginning in March and the whole project having to be completed on time by June. Everyone involved appreciated how important these buildings are for the Grenfell community.”

Composite Profiles Managing Director Mark Norton added: “We felt privileged to be approached by the BCSA, who were contacted by the BBC, and given the opportunity to support such a worthy project.

“I am just so pleased that we had the specialist knowledge and skilled installations teams required for the project. We have completed many projects along the M4/A4 corridor and therefore know how to overcome the logistical challenges of tricky access and building under a flyover!”
