The Structural Steel Design Awards 1971

From Building with Steel, November 1971

The British Steel Corporation in conjunction with the British Constructural Steelwork Association has once again presented awards for structural steelwork design. The objectives are the same as previous years and are ‘to recognise the high standards of design attainable in the use of structural steel and its potential in terms of efficiency, economy and aesthetics’.

The award-winning structures demonstrate that these criteria have been met most successfully. It is interesting to note that in this respect the buildings are of an industrial nature where particularly stringent conditions apply in terms of economy and structural efficiency. Yet despite this the buildings are very pleasing in appearance and are clear expressions of their function. It is clear that design in steel provides the designer with the greatest scope for the embodiment of his ideas.
