Sports complex swings into action

One of the UK’s largest public sports complexes is currently under construction in East Kilbride. Known as the Playsport Scotland project, the main contractor is Sir Robert McAlpine working on behalf of joint venture Playgolf Kilmartin.

Atlas Ward is responsible for the fabrication and erection of 850t of structural steelwork as well as the installation of floor decking for the project’s building which measures 20,438m².

The sports complex will include a nine hole golf course, a 58 bay golf driving range and golf academy, one of the UK’s largest indoor tennis centres, eight five-a-side football pitches, two seven-a-side pitches, plus a separate football bar and changing room.

Other facilities will include a family centre with adventure golf, laser games and soft play area, and a health and fitness centre containing a 25m swimming pool. The complex is due to open in spring 2009.
