British Steel publishes Decarbonisation Action Report

Posted on by in News

Exploring the progress the company is making towards its sustainability goals and providing clarity on the true measurement of the carbon impact arising from its products, British Steel has published its first Decarbonisation Action Report.

The Report highlights British Steel’s commitment to setting company-wide emission reductions in line with climate science.

It has a Low Carbon Roadmap, which will deliver an 82% carbon intensity reduction by 2035 and net zero by 2050.

The company has also begun feasibility studies on the integration of Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) production into its operation. The EAF method is said to be more efficient as it requires less fuel and allows steel to be produced from 100% scrap metal.

British Steel Commercial Director, Construction, Ben Cunliffe, said: “Our commitment to a carbon intensity saving represents one of the most significant decarbonisation projects across the whole of the UK national interest, and we very much look forward to working closely with our customers during this exciting transition.

“Our Decarbonisation Action Report explores both the progress we are making towards our goals and provides clarity on the true measurement of the carbon impact arising from our products.

“It also looks at why buying British provides huge economic value to the UK in terms of jobs and billions of pounds of GVA (Gross Value Added), whereas importing not only supports steel industries and economies outside the UK but also generates significantly greater emissions through the transportation process.”
