Anfield opens its new Main Stand

anfield-stand160915Containing 5,000t of steelwork and adding 8,500 seats to Anfield’s capacity, Liverpool FC’s new Main Stand was officially opened for last Saturday’s game against League champions Leicester City.

The stand forms part of a wider £260M redevelopment of Anfield and the surrounding area. The project has so far included new and refurbished homes, office space and new public areas.

Mayor of Liverpool Joe Anderson said: “The football club is a major employer and, in many ways, the economic anchor for the wider community.

“Its renewed commitment to Anfield has brought certainty and enabled us, as a partnership, to bring forward wider improvements which are genuinely transforming the local area and delivering new opportunities for residents and businesses.”

Working on behalf of main contractor Carillion, Severfield fabricated, supplied and erected the project’s steelwork.

The largest steel element of the job was a 140m-long roof truss, weighing 650t, which had to be lifted into place by two of the largest cranes in the country.
