Construction due to start on Cardiff arena next year

Construction is due to start next year on the new 15,000 capacity Cardiff Bay arena, a project that will also include 1,100 apartments, shops, restaurants and bars, covering 30 acres in total.

The arena will likely open in 2025, a year later than previously planned. Its opening could mean the closure of the nearby Motorpoint arena. Cardiff Council has revealed Live Nation, which runs the Motorpoint, will run the Bay arena.

Forming a central element of the wider Atlantic Wharf development, the indoor arena could create up to 2,000 jobs during construction, with a further 1,000 jobs when the venue is up and running.

Cardiff Council says a new indoor arena is the missing piece of city infrastructure needed to cement Cardiff’s international reputation as a major events city.

They say that plans and a ring-fenced budget for the arena have been in the works since as early as 2006 and will help make the plans a reality.
