St Helens’ historic landmark to get major makeover

Main contractor Robertson Construction North West has been appointed to transform the Gamble Building in St Helens town centre into a creative and learning hub.

Built in 1896 with funding from Sir David Gamble (St Helens’ first Borough Mayor), the Grade II-listed building has been a prominent part of the town’s civic and educational heritage for more than 130 years.

As well as an extensive refurbishment, the latest plans include the construction of a contemporary extension to the rear of the Victorian building, providing a new entrance that will link to the nearby St Helens Transport Interchange.

Councillor Jack Benyon, Portfolio Holder for Regeneration, Property and Planning at St Helens Borough Council, said: “This is an important step forward for the iconic building in the heart of the town centre.

“We know residents are keen to see it restored to its former glory as the home of the central library and so much more.”
