Hucknall-based steel contractor hosts local MP

Posted on by in Weekly News

Michelle Welsh, MP for the Sherwood Forest constituency in Nottinghamshire (which includes the town of Hucknall), visited local steelwork contractor Briton Fabricators to meet staff and discuss the opportunities and challenges currently facing the UK constructional steelwork sector.

During the visit, which was also attended by the British Constructional Steelwork Association (BCSA), issues currently affecting the sector, including the proposed steel tariff and quota arrangements due to come into force on 1 July, were also discussed.

Jonathan Clemens, CEO of BCSA, outlined industry concerns regarding the potential impact of the measures on downstream steelwork companies and the wider construction supply chain. Michelle Welsh MP acknowledged the seriousness of the issue and agreed to engage further with parliamentary colleagues and discuss the matter further.

Michelle Welsh MP said: “It was a pleasure to visit Briton Fabricators and meet the team behind a business that has been contributing to major infrastructure projects across the UK for more than 50 years.

“It was valuable to hear directly about the opportunities and challenges facing the constructional steelwork industry and I look forward to continuing discussions with industry representatives and parliamentary colleagues to ensure concerns are properly considered.”

Dean Morcom, Managing Director of Briton Fabricators, added: “We were delighted to welcome Michelle, the visit provided a valuable opportunity to discuss some of the practical and policy challenges currently affecting businesses across the steelwork sector and the wider manufacturing supply chain.”
