Work set to start on Tower Hamlets leisure centre

Posted on by in Weekly News

The London Borough of Tower Hamlets has appointed Guildmore Group to lead the £68 million regeneration of St George’s Leisure Centre in Shadwell, East London.

The project is said to be one of the borough’s most significant community infrastructure schemes and builds on a long-standing partnership between Guildmore and the council.

The existing leisure centre will be demolished and replaced with a modern four-storey facility. It will include a 25m swimming pool, learner pool, splash pad, sports hall and fitness studios.

As part of the scheme, Guildmore will also deliver a nine-storey residential block providing 30 new social housing units, three of which will be fully accessible. Public realm and landscaping improvements will extend to St George’s Gardens and surrounding footpaths.

Two heritage assets on site will be restored as part of the works: a Victorian mortuary and a listed boundary wall, reflecting the council’s commitment to preserving the character of the area alongside new development.

Engin Ertosun, Chief Executive Officer of Guildmore Group, said: “We are proud and excited to have been selected by the London Borough of Tower Hamlets for this project. This scheme will have a real and lasting impact on local residents’ lives, and we feel the responsibility that comes with that.

“We are committed to delivering to the highest standard and ensuring that the leisure centre serves this community for generations to come.”
