University of Southampton scheme celebrates construction milestone

Posted on by in Weekly News

To celebrate reaching the highest point of construction at the University of Southampton’s new flagship teaching building, the project team held a steel-signing ceremony.

As well as representatives from main contractor Kier, the event was attended by the University’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Mark E. Smith, the Sheriff of Southampton, Councillor Pat Evemy, and the Students’ Union President, Emma Brown.

The 15,000m2 building, named B75 to celebrate 75 years since the University was granted a Royal Charter – will form part of the University’s new North East Quadrant on its Highfield Campus.

The building is arranged into four distinct parts; two steel-framed blocks and two concrete blocks. Bourne Steel is erecting 625t of steelwork for the project.

Professor Mark E. Smith said: “The North East Quadrant symbolises our dedication to creating innovative and inspiring learning environments for our current and future students. We are committed to providing an outstanding experience and will continue to invest in our facilities to ensure teaching spaces meet the needs of our community.”
