Steelwork contractor delivering multiple packages for Midlothian water treatment scheme

Working on behalf of water engineering specialist JN Bentley, AJ Engineering & Construction Services (AJE) has secured two additional work packages at the Bilston Glen water treatment project.

AJE has been delivering the structural steelwork and cladding package for the project, but as work has progressed, it became evident that the site’s restricted footprint and complex programme requirements would benefit from a contractor capable of delivering multiple disciplines.

Consequently, the company will also be providing the access metalwork and mechanical installation packages.

AJE Project Manager James Mashedder said: “We’re delighted to further strengthen our relationship with JN Bentley through the award of these additional packages at Bilston Glen.

“One of the key factors in our success within the water sector is our ability to deliver multiple work scopes simultaneously, providing clients with a simplified and coordinated approach to project delivery.

“By bringing together all of the packages under one contractor, we can improve communication, reduce interfaces and create programme efficiencies that ultimately benefit the client.”

The integrated delivery approach has already enabled AJE to identify significant installation benefits. By installing sections of the access metalwork while the building steelwork remains exposed, work can be completed ahead of the cladding installation, resulting in a more efficient construction sequence.

The same site team responsible for the access metalwork installation will also undertake the mechanical package, reducing the overall number of operatives required on the constrained site.

The completed project will clean and treat water coming from the former Bilston Glen colliery, ensuring the surrounding rivers are pollutant-free.
