Steel projects receive Tekla Awards

Posted on by in Weekly News

Trimble has announced the winners of its annual UK Tekla Awards for 2018, with steel-framed projects winning in three categories.

The Awards focus on projects of all shapes and sizes, which have used Trimble’s Tekla Structures during the design and modelling process.

Richard Fletcher Managing Director at Trimble Solutions said: “We are delighted with how many of our customers entered this year. It has been a difficult task to choose the winners after a really strong set of entries.

“The Tekla awards were designed for our customers to help them raise their company profile and attract potential new clients, as well as impress existing ones. The awards showcase the hard work and innovation that goes into using Tekla software to solve engineering challenges, working collaboratively and delivering better outcomes for all involved.”

The steel-framed 10 Fenchurch Avenue, a new 15-storey building in the heart of the City of London won the Commercial Projects category.

Designed by Eric Parry Architects with CORE acting as Development Manager on behalf of Generali, William Hare fabricated, supplied and erected the steelwork, and Arup provided structural engineering, geotechnical engineering and security services.

When opened, the building will offer circa 60,000m² of office and retail space and will include a stylish restaurant at the penultimate level and a unique, publicly-accessible roof garden – a landscaped space with wisteria-entwined, galvanized steel pergola structures and stunning views across the city.

In the Industrial Projects category ECS Engineering Services won for its Water Control Structures, which showcased various recently completed water control projects set in a fictional site model.

The model contains, lock gates, a footbridge, trash screens, radial gates, fish passes, radar sensors and platforms, stop logs, limpet dams, hydraulic lift bridge, flap valves, penstocks and associated ladders, access steel, winches and hand railing.

With a steel frame erected by Billington Structures, Coventry Leisure Centre and Water Park won the Sports and Recreation Projects category. This landmark new complex replaces an existing council office block on a tightly constrained site next to the city’s 70m-high Grade II-listed Christchurch Spire.

The building contains a 25m swimming pool, squash courts, plant areas and a spa on the ground floor. The first floor accommodates a gym, changing rooms, further plant areas and a children’s splash pool.

Above this sits the pool ride hall: a cylindrical, multi-level, open-plan structure which forms the main architectural theme of the building.

Within the hall, a lower level provides the base for the wave pool, lazy river and associated balance tanks. The main hall level above this forms the pool surround where many of the rides culminate, and from where visitors ascend twin staircases leading upwards to the very top of the steel-framed ride tower.
