Newcastle car park to become residential block

Posted on by in Weekly News

Being developed by Capital & Centric, a 1960s-built multi-storey car park in central Newcastle-under-Lyme is being transformed into a residential block containing 111 one and two bedroom apartments.

Known as Karparc, the scheme being undertaken by main contractor Clegg Construction, is said to be a UK first.

The reimagined brutalist frame will also feature a striking three-storey atrium, with planted areas and a ground-floor gym, lounge and social hub.

The developer said the imaginative reuse of this existing structure offers an innovative solution to the UK’s housing shortage, bringing new homes forward quickly, sustainably, and without the carbon footprint of demolition and rebuild.

John Moffat, Joint Managing Director at Capital & Centric, said: “This isn’t your average regeneration. We’re flipping expectations of what’s possible in our towns. Karparc is bringing new homes, green spaces and energy to a spot that’s long been overlooked.”

Simon Tagg, Council Leader at Newcastle-under-Lyme Borough Council, said: “We’re really looking forward to seeing this visionary project – the first of its type in the country – come to life which will attract new people into the area who will in turn support our local businesses.”
