Key Cambridge commercial development takes shape

Completion of Cambridge’s ambitious CB1 master plan is a step closer as steel construction has past the half-way mark on the scheme’s latest project.

Known as 50/60 Station Road, the building is a twin office block that will offer more than 15,000m² of office space as well as ground floor retail units.

Sat atop of a basement car park, the steel-framed offices will rise to nine and eight-storeys respectively. Forming one large structural frame, the two blocks are joined by a centrally positioned link building.

Working on behalf of main contractor Galliford Try, Billington Structures will have erected 2,000t of steel when its package completes in January.

Gaining its stability from two concrete cores, the offices feature internal spans of up 12m. In order to accommodate all of the project’s services within the depth of the steelwork, all of the beams are cellular members.

Galliford Try has recently completed the new Ibis hotel and cycle park adjacent to Cambridge train station, which is also part of the 26-acre CB1 scheme.

Overall, CB1 will create new office and retail space, as well as student and private accommodation and a remodelled station and transport interchange.
