Green light for Gillingham Gas Works overhaul

Posted on by in Weekly News

Plans to regenerate the former Gillingham Gas Works have received unanimous approval from Medway Council’s Planning Committee, unlocking what is said to be one of the most significant regeneration projects in Kent for decades.

The scheme will transform the heavily contaminated brownfield site into a new sustainable waterfront neighbourhood, delivering up to 500 new homes and a range of commercial, community and retail units.

The development also includes a new foodstore and extensive public realm improvements, unlocking the Medway waterfront.

Urban greening, play areas and improved access along the waterside will also allow for a new sailing clubhouse and provide extensive remediation of the failing sea wall.

Ian Perrell, Group Director at The Harris Partnership, said: “Securing unanimous approval from the Planning Committee is fantastic news for Gillingham and the continued regeneration of the Medway waterfront.

What is particularly rewarding is hearing councillors speak positively about the design, height and place-making strategy proposed. From the outset, we wanted to create something that is not simply housing on a brownfield site, but a bold piece of waterfront community-led regeneration that establishes a new landmark for Gillingham.”
