SMD launches its lowest carbon decking system
Structural Metal Decks (SMD) has recently launched R733 floor and roof decking, its lowest carbon steel product to date.
Part of the SMD Steel Reborn® initiative, the products deliver high-performance steel floor and roof deck profiles with a significantly lower carbon footprint.
Manufactured from SSAB Zero™ Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) steel, which is produced using recycled material and renewable energy, making it cleaner and more energy efficient, R733 has a verified embodied carbon figure of 733kg CO₂e per tonne for the input steel coil. This is approximately 75% less than standard Blast Furnace (BF) steel (the typical market offering for the last 35 years).
“Sustainably produced, R733 has the same strength and reliability our customers expect, but with a much smaller environmental impact,” says SMD Technical Director, Jamie Turner.
“By offering R733 in conjunction with the solar energy and battery storage used in our manufacturing processes, we’re positioning ourselves as leaders in low carbon steel solutions for floor and roof decking.”
