London’s ExCeL Centre expanding with steel

Due to complete in 2024, a 25,000m2 steel-framed extension to east London’s ExCeL Centre is currently taking shape.

Being built to the east of the existing steel-framed Centre, the project represents the third phase of construction at the site and will create a ground floor exhibition space, seamlessly integrated into the existing venue. Above, on an upper level, there will be a high-end convention space, modern meeting rooms and catering facilities.

Working on behalf main contractor McLaren, Severfield is fabricating, supplying and erecting the steelwork for the project,

Forming the column-free ground floor exhibition space, as well as supporting the floor of the upper level’s convention area, is a series of 60m-long x 5m-deep trusses. Delivered in four sections, the trusses are assembled on site into two 30m-long pieces, before being lifted into place by two 100t-capacity cranes.

Topping the extension is a further series of 50m-long roof trusses, which are also delivered to site in four sections.

The scheme will create a net zero carbon ready building, utilising 50% recycled steel, targeting a BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rating, while featuring sustainability solutions including PV panels, air source heat pumps, rainwater harvesting, and hybrid ventilation.
