Devon’s newest railway station set to arrive
Okehampton Interchange station is a step closer to welcoming passengers after steel structures, consisting of a 26.5m-long footbridge, a lift shaft and stair units, were installed during three consecutive night time rail possessions.
Using a 350t-capacity crane, the bridge’s main span was lifted into place in two sections. The completed structure will provide access from the 200-space car park to the new station’s single platform.
Working on behalf of Network Rail’s main contractor Octavius Infrastructure, Adey Steel fabricated and supplied the steel elements for the project.
“This project highlights the strength of collaboration, precision engineering, the benefits of offsite fabrication and expert project management across all teams involved,” said Andrew Adey, Managing Director at Adey Steel.
Okehampton Interchange is a £15 million project, made possible due to Devon County Council and West Devon Borough Council successfully bidding for Government funding, together with contributions from both authorities.
The newest addition to the Dartmoor Line, the station is set to open in Summer 2026. It will complement the existing Okehampton station, providing an hourly train service connecting West Devon, Torridge and North Cornwall with Exeter and beyond.
Network Rail Industry Programme Director Bogdan Lupu said: “Our plans are now coming to life as the footbridge platform structure is now in place, marking a major milestone in the project’s progress.
“Everyone can now see it really coming together and our work continues to get passengers onto the platform as soon as possible.”
Rail Minister Lord Peter Hendy said: “The latest progress at Okehampton Interchange is an exciting step forward for the local community and, thanks to £15 million in Government support, it will soon unlock countless benefits, including improved regional connectivity and modern services that local people can rely on.
“Alongside the dedicated work of local councils, we’re on track with our Plan for Change commitment to deliver growth, jobs and homes through a modern railway that Britain needs and deserves. I look forward to seeing the station open next year.”
West Devon Borough Council’s Lead Member for the Built Environment Councillor Caroline Mott, added: “The progress of the station is fantastic news for our community. This milestone brings us closer to a station that will not only benefit residents but also provide a significant boost to local businesses by improving access for customers, staff and suppliers.”
