New Orange Book is an essential tool for design teams

Posted on by in News

The second edition of the British Constructional Steelwork Association’s (BCSA) Orange Book, Allocation of Design Responsibilities in Constructional Steelwork for Buildings, is now available to download for free.

Updated to reflect current legislation and industry practice, the publication provides practical guidance to help project teams establish clear design responsibilities and manage information effectively.

Accurate, timely and comprehensive design information is essential. When responsibilities are unclear or information arrives late, the consequences can include costly changes, delays and disputes.

To help navigate current practice, the BCSA’s second edition of the Orange Book includes revised checklists aligned with the RIBA and IStructE Plans of Work, alongside updates covering BIM, temporary works and intumescent paint systems.

The project directory and checklists can be downloaded and completed on any device, making them practical tools for everyday project use. Use them to record project participants, allocate design responsibilities and agree what information is needed, who should provide it and when.

A free copy of the Orange Book can be downloaded from the BCSA Book Shop: https://bcsa.org.uk/product/allocation-of-design-responsibilities-in-constructional-steelwork-pdf/

Deborah Harrison, Legal Director and Company Secretary at BCSA is hosting a webinar on Tuesday 26th January to explain how BCSA’s updated Orange Book can help project teams define design responsibilities, identify gaps and overlaps, and translate the agreed allocation into clear contractual obligations.
