{"id":43665,"date":"2025-09-02T14:52:31","date_gmt":"2025-09-02T14:52:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsteelconstruction.com\/wp\/?p=43665"},"modified":"2025-09-02T14:52:33","modified_gmt":"2025-09-02T14:52:33","slug":"hs2-construction-team-complete-mega-steel-bridge-installation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsteelconstruction.com\/wp\/hs2-construction-team-complete-mega-steel-bridge-installation\/","title":{"rendered":"HS2 construction team complete mega steel bridge installation"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsteelconstruction.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/n1.2-BirminghamViaduct2509.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"335\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsteelconstruction.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/n1.2-BirminghamViaduct2509.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-43666\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.newsteelconstruction.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/n1.2-BirminghamViaduct2509.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.newsteelconstruction.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/n1.2-BirminghamViaduct2509-300x168.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Weighing 1,631t and measuring 112m in length, an assembled steel <a href=\"https:\/\/steelconstruction.info\/Bridges\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">bridge<\/a> has been manoeuvred into place during a series of nighttime operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Forming part of the HS2 construction works, the bridge spans Birmingham\u2019s busy ring road at Lawley Middleway and is one of five viaducts that will bring high-speed trains into Curzon Street Station.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A skidding system, with a jacking push\/pull mechanism, was used alongside SPMTs to move the structure into place across the highway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To minimise disruption to road users, the span was moved around 12m every night, ensuring that the road remained open during the day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Working on behalf of Balfour Beatty VINCI (BBV), Severfield <a href=\"https:\/\/www.steelconstruction.info\/Fabrication\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">fabricated<\/a>, supplied and <a href=\"https:\/\/steelconstruction.info\/Construction\">installed<\/a> the steelwork for the project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Georgios Markakis, Project Manager at BBV said: \u201cThis operation was a first for BBV, combining SPMTs and a skidding system to lift, rotate and move this giant structure into place. Work is progressing well on this section of the Curzon Approaches, delivered by a team of more than 250 people, including steel welders, steel fixers, joiners and engineering apprentices.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Elsewhere on the HS2 scheme, William Hare is delivering eight overbridges and 11 footbridges, requiring more than 7,000t of steelwork.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of them was the A422 Brackley Overbridge, which was installed on behalf of main contractor EKFB, (a joint venture comprising Eiffage, Kier, Ferrovial Construction and BAM Nuttall).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The 129m-long steel superstructure was installed in three parts, with the central span preassembled on site and manoeuvred onto its two concrete piers using an SMPT.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The two back spans were later installed by a 400t-capacity crawler crane.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The steelwork included 20 <a href=\"https:\/\/steelconstruction.info\/Steel_construction_products#Plate_girders\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">plate girders<\/a>, measuring 2m-high \u00d7 1.2m-wide, and up to 29.5m in length.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The biggest structure being constructed by the EKFB and William Hare team is the Turweston Viaduct on the border between Buckinghamshire and Northamptonshire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The \u2018green bridge\u2019, which is 99m-wide, requires 36 steel girders to support 2,700m<sup>3<\/sup> of earth.
