{"id":37485,"date":"2023-03-07T23:58:00","date_gmt":"2023-03-07T23:58:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsteelconstruction.com\/wp\/?p=37485"},"modified":"2023-03-07T23:58:01","modified_gmt":"2023-03-07T23:58:01","slug":"school-stacks-up-with-steel","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsteelconstruction.com\/wp\/school-stacks-up-with-steel\/","title":{"rendered":"School stacks up with steel"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsteelconstruction.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/n1.3-North-Brent2303.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"418\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsteelconstruction.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/n1.3-North-Brent2303.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-37486\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.newsteelconstruction.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/n1.3-North-Brent2303.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.newsteelconstruction.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/n1.3-North-Brent2303-300x209.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Working on behalf of BAM Construction, Elland Steel Structures has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.steelconstruction.info\/Fabrication\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">fabricated<\/a>, supplied and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.steelconstruction.info\/Construction#Steel_erection\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">erected<\/a> 760t of steelwork for the new North Brent School in London.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Due to the confined nature of the inner-city site, the project <a href=\"https:\/\/www.steelconstruction.info\/Design\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">design<\/a> team has had to deviate away from a traditional three-storey building arrangement and stack all of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.steelconstruction.info\/Education_buildings\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">school<\/a>\u2019s amenities into one large five-storey <a href=\"https:\/\/www.steelconstruction.info\/Braced_frames\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">steel-framed<\/a> structure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The design includes fourth floor sixth form teaching spaces that are positioned in between a triple-height ground floor sports hall and a rooftop multi-use games area (MUGA).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The sports hall is spanned by a series of 18m-long x 3m-deep <a href=\"https:\/\/www.steelconstruction.info\/Trusses\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">trusses<\/a> that create column-free space and also support the smaller column <a href=\"https:\/\/www.steelconstruction.info\/Concept_design#Floor_grids\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">grid pattern<\/a> required for the teaching spaces above.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The main columns throughout the scheme are spliced at third floor slab level, and in this part of the structure the top members protrude above the teaching floor and support a brick clad wall that surrounds the MUGA. A netting system will span across the top of the rooftop sports zone, allowing it to be an outdoor area open to the elements, but preventing balls from escaping.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Adjoining the sports hall\/sixth form block, there is a bridge structure that connects it to the main L-shaped teaching building.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Further highlighting the scheme\u2019s efficient stacked-up design approach, the teaching block incorporates a double-height main hall at first floor. A series of 18m-long x 600mm-deep <a href=\"https:\/\/www.steelconstruction.info\/Steel_construction_products#Plate_girders\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">plate girders <\/a>span the hall and support the columns for the third and fourth floor classrooms above.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>North Brent School is scheduled to open in time for the autumn 2023 term.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Working on behalf of BAM Construction, Elland Steel Structures has fabricated, supplied and erected 760t of steelwork for the new North Brent School in London.
