{"id":36285,"date":"2022-09-06T13:56:17","date_gmt":"2022-09-06T13:56:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsteelconstruction.com\/wp\/?p=36285"},"modified":"2022-09-06T13:56:18","modified_gmt":"2022-09-06T13:56:18","slug":"updated-commentary-of-nsss-7th-edition-now-available-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsteelconstruction.com\/wp\/updated-commentary-of-nsss-7th-edition-now-available-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Updated Commentary of NSSS 7th edition now available"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsteelconstruction.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/n1.1NSSS2209.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"250\" height=\"309\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsteelconstruction.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/n1.1NSSS2209.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-36286\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.newsteelconstruction.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/n1.1NSSS2209.jpg 250w, https:\/\/www.newsteelconstruction.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/n1.1NSSS2209-243x300.jpg 243w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>The British Constructional Steelwork Association (BCSA) has published the 3rd edition of the Commentary on the National Structural Steelwork Specification for Building Construction 7th edition (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.steelconstruction.info\/Steelwork_specification#The_National_Structural_Steelwork_Specification_for_Building_Construction\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">NSSS<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Commentary has been prepared to give guidance and additional information on the background and philosophy behind the recommendations given in the NSSS.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.steelconstruction.info\/Steelwork_specification#Main_changes_in_the_NSSS_.287th_Edition.29\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">changes to the 7th edition<\/a> of the NSSS are also reflected in the new Commentary which gives additional information and guidance on the following topics:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The references to British Standards (issued with BS, BS EN, BS EN ISO or BS ISO references) have been updated.<\/li><li>Section 5 \u2013 Workmanship. The Steelwork contractor\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.steelconstruction.info\/Welding\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">welding<\/a> quality management system shall be certified to the standard quality requirements described in BS EN ISO 3834-3 for Execution Class 2.<\/li><li>Section 10 \u2013 Protective treatment (corrosion and fire). This section has been extensively modified and includes updated requirements for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.steelconstruction.info\/Corrosion_protection\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">corrosion protection<\/a> systems and new clauses on the specification, application and testing of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.steelconstruction.info\/Fire_protecting_structural_steelwork#Intumescent_Coatings\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">intumescent coatings<\/a>.<\/li><li>Section 11 \u2013 Quality management. This section requires steelwork contractors to have all the necessary facilities, skills and effective quality management to ensure that their services and products conform to the NSSS. It stipulates that the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.steelconstruction.info\/Fabrication#Quality_Management_System_Certification_.28QM.29\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">quality management system<\/a> shall be open to assessment by the Employer or be certified by an approved certification body for compliance with BS EN ISO 9001. In addition, it stipulates that the manufacturer\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.steelconstruction.info\/Fabrication#UKCA_Marking_and_Factory_Production_Control_.28FPC.29\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">factory production control <\/a>system shall be certified by an Approved Body for compliance with BS EN 1090-1.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>BCSA Director of Engineering Dr Ana Girao Coelho said: \u201cThe Commentary was first drafted by Richard Stainsby and Roger Pope, and has now been updated by Dr David Moore and myself and reviewed by the NSSS Steering Committee.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hard copies of the 3rd edition of the Commentary on the NSSS (BCSA Pub.
