{"id":34358,"date":"2021-11-10T00:32:39","date_gmt":"2021-11-10T00:32:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsteelconstruction.com\/wp\/?p=34358"},"modified":"2021-11-10T11:14:06","modified_gmt":"2021-11-10T11:14:06","slug":"pre-construction-deal-signed-for-british-library-archive","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsteelconstruction.com\/wp\/pre-construction-deal-signed-for-british-library-archive\/","title":{"rendered":"Pre-construction deal signed for British Library archive"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsteelconstruction.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/British-Library211111.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"387\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsteelconstruction.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/British-Library211111.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-34359\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.newsteelconstruction.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/British-Library211111.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.newsteelconstruction.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/British-Library211111-300x194.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Wates Construction has been appointed as pre-construction stage partner for the redevelopment of the British Library site at Boston Spa, West Yorkshire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The 45-week PCSC (pre-construction services consultant) role will see Wates working alongside the client\u2019s design team up to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.steelconstruction.info\/Building_design_using_steel_-_a_summary_for_architects#Stages_in_the_RIBA_Plan_of_Work\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">RIBA Stage 4<\/a><a> <\/a>with services engineer, Buro Happold and London-based, architectural practice, Carmody Groarke.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The scheme involves the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.steelconstruction.info\/Construction\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">construction<\/a> of a new 28m-high, 5,274m<sup>2<\/sup> fully automated net-zero carbon archive building, which will feature a public viewing gallery and 220km of extra shelf space. The project also includes an extensive renovation of the nearby 1970s Brutalist-style Urquhart Building for the library\u2019s 550 on-site staff, including a new reading room, restaurant and caf\u00e9 for visitors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.steelconstruction.info\/Sustainability\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Sustainability<\/a> will be an integral feature of this ambitious programme, including the creation of new and improved green spaces to support biodiversity and enhance the natural environment surrounding the site.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Phil Spence, Chief Operating Officer, British Library, said: \u201cThis is a significant milestone for our Boston Spa site, which will transform the accessibility of our collections and services to people nationally. We look forward to working with our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.steelconstruction.info\/Design\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">design<\/a> team to deliver vital facilities that will support the growth of the national collection and open up access to a new generation of visitors.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>David Wingfield, Regional Director North East, Wates Construction, said: \u201cWe are delighted with our appointment.
