{"id":32149,"date":"2021-01-04T13:12:30","date_gmt":"2021-01-04T13:12:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsteelconstruction.com\/wp\/?p=32149"},"modified":"2021-01-04T13:12:33","modified_gmt":"2021-01-04T13:12:33","slug":"bridge-adds-to-cambridge-walking-and-cycling-trail","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsteelconstruction.com\/wp\/bridge-adds-to-cambridge-walking-and-cycling-trail\/","title":{"rendered":"Bridge adds to Cambridge walking and cycling trail"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsteelconstruction.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/nCamBridge2021.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-32124\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.newsteelconstruction.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/nCamBridge2021.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.newsteelconstruction.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/nCamBridge2021-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The Abbey Chesterton Bridge has been lifted into place, completing a significant milestone in the delivery of the Chisholm Trail walking and cycling route in Cambridge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.steelconstruction.info\/Design_of_steel_footbridges\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">bridge<\/a>, which was designed by Skanska and is based upon a Knight Architects concept, spans the River Cam and sits adjacent to a Network Rail line.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The new structure was lifted into place during one short overnight <a href=\"https:\/\/www.steelconstruction.info\/Design_for_steel_bridge_construction#Erection_during_possessions\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">possession<\/a> at a weekend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Working on behalf of main contractor Tarmac, S H Structures <a href=\"https:\/\/www.steelconstruction.info\/Design_for_steel_bridge_construction#Fabricating_the_steelwork\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">fabricated<\/a> the 140t bridge and delivered it to site in three sections. Once assembled on land adjacent to the bridge\u2019s final installation position, a 1,200t-capacity <a href=\"https:\/\/www.steelconstruction.info\/Design_for_steel_bridge_construction#Erection_using_cranes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">crane<\/a> was then used to lift the 44m-long \u00d7 6m-wide bridge into its final position.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWith the assembled bridge taking up significant space on site, the remaining confined environment meant the crane and its rigging only just fitted within site limits,\u201d said S H Structures Contracts Director David Perry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe crane\u2019s proximity to the river meant that a piled crane pad had to be provided for the lift and the bridge sits inside the curved concrete abutments with only a theoretical 50mm of clearance each side.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once complete, the scheme will allow thousands of people to walk or cycle on a mostly off-road and traffic-free route connecting Cambridge North to Cambridge Station.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Abbey Chesterton Bridge has been lifted into place, completing a significant milestone in the delivery of the Chisholm Trail walking and cycling route in Cambridge.
