{"id":22031,"date":"2016-06-08T10:00:15","date_gmt":"2016-06-08T10:00:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.newsteelconstruction.com\/wp\/?p=22031"},"modified":"2016-06-08T10:00:15","modified_gmt":"2016-06-08T10:00:15","slug":"steel-bridges-secure-a1-upgrade","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsteelconstruction.com\/wp\/steel-bridges-secure-a1-upgrade\/","title":{"rendered":"Steel bridges secure A1 upgrade"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-22024\" src=\"http:\/\/www.newsteelconstruction.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/A1-bridge160609.jpg\" alt=\"A1-bridge160609\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.newsteelconstruction.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/A1-bridge160609.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.newsteelconstruction.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/A1-bridge160609-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/>Seven <a href=\"http:\/\/www.steelconstruction.info\/Multi-girder_composite_bridges\" target=\"_blank\">steel composite bridges<\/a> are being installed by Cleveland Bridge as part of the A1 upgrade in North Yorkshire.<\/p>\n<p>Working on behalf of main contractor Carillion\/Morgan Sindall JV, the bridges form an integral part of the Leeming to Barton A1 scheme where the existing dual carriageway is being upgraded into a three-lane motorway.<\/p>\n<p>The 12-mile stretch of road carries approximately 69,000 vehicles every day and according to Highways England, it is not entirely fit for purpose for today\u2019s traffic volume.<\/p>\n<p>It suffers from poor alignment with numerous side roads and minor lanes entering and exiting, which has contributed to the accident severity ratio being significantly higher than other similar roads.<\/p>\n<p>The seven new <a href=\"http:\/\/www.steelconstruction.info\/Bridges\" target=\"_blank\">steel bridges<\/a> either span the widened road, or carry the new highway over streets and rivers.<\/p>\n<p>The longest bridge is the 95m-long Kneeton Lane Bridge [pictured] just south of Scotch Corner, which has a steel tonnage of 398t.<\/p>\n<p>The two-span bridge is supported by concrete abutments positioned at either end and a pier located in the central reservation.<\/p>\n<p>To install this bridge Cleveland Bridge <a href=\"http:\/\/www.steelconstruction.info\/Design_for_steel_bridge_construction#Transportation\" target=\"_blank\">delivered<\/a> six braced pairs of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.steelconstruction.info\/Multi-girder_composite_bridges#Plate_girders\" target=\"_blank\">girders<\/a>, each measuring 2.5m deep, to site and assembled them into units, each measuring 15m wide by 23.75m-long. This assembly work was carried out using a 500t-capacity mobile crane and done on the temporarily closed northbound carriageway of the A1.<\/p>\n<p>Cleveland Bridge has also completed the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.steelconstruction.info\/Design_for_steel_bridge_construction#Erection_using_cranes\" target=\"_blank\">erection<\/a> of the Brompton North\/South bridge, Agricola bridge, Sowber Hill bridge, Kneeton Hall bridge and Low Street bridge.
