{"id":21242,"date":"2016-02-11T13:02:19","date_gmt":"2016-02-11T13:02:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.newsteelconstruction.com\/wp\/?p=21242"},"modified":"2016-02-11T13:02:19","modified_gmt":"2016-02-11T13:02:19","slug":"steel-providing-a-safe-design-for-petrochemical-headquarters-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsteelconstruction.com\/wp\/steel-providing-a-safe-design-for-petrochemical-headquarters-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Steel providing a safe design for petrochemical headquarters"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-21226\" src=\"http:\/\/www.newsteelconstruction.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/nINEOS1602.jpg\" alt=\"nINEOS1602\" width=\"600\" height=\"448\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.newsteelconstruction.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/nINEOS1602.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.newsteelconstruction.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/nINEOS1602-300x224.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/>A <a href=\"http:\/\/www.steelconstruction.info\/Braced_frames\" target=\"_blank\">steel frame<\/a> designed specifically to withstand a blast scenario is taking shape at the INEOS petrochemical facility at Grangemouth in Scotland.<\/p>\n<p>More than 900t of structural steelwork is being <a href=\"http:\/\/www.steelconstruction.info\/Construction#Steel_erection\" target=\"_blank\">erected<\/a> to construct a three-storey \u00a320M headquarters building for INEOS Olefins &amp; Polymers UK, the country\u2019s largest privately-owned company and one of the world\u2019s largest chemical businesses.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause of the location, the design stage for this project was more onerous than would be expected for a job of this size,\u201d said BAM Construction Project Manager Gary Brown.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause the building is located within a major petrochemical complex the office HQ had to be designed to take this into account and so we employed a specialist blast engineer who had to review all of the<a href=\"http:\/\/www.steelconstruction.info\/Concept_design\" target=\"_blank\"> initial designs<\/a>, including the steel frame, secondary steel and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.steelconstruction.info\/Building_envelopes\" target=\"_blank\">cladding<\/a>, to ensure everything was blast resistant.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Woolgar Hunter Senior Engineer Kenneth Irvine added: \u201cWe worked closely with Michael Laird Architects to develop a solution for the steel frame and cladding, which addresses the loading issue but still provides an elegant and economic building.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe structural design had to take into potential blast loadings and so the steel frame has to be flexible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The requirement for the steel frame to be <a href=\"http:\/\/www.steelconstruction.info\/Steel_material_properties#Ductility\" target=\"_blank\">ductile<\/a> in the event of a blast led the design team to choose <a href=\"http:\/\/www.steelconstruction.info\/Concept_design#Concrete_or_steel_cores\" target=\"_blank\">steel-framed cores <\/a>for the building instead of the more rigid concrete versions.<\/p>\n<p>All of the cross bracing comprises 250mm \u00d7 12mm flat sections which were chosen as this steelwork offers more flexibility.<\/p>\n<p>BHC is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.steelconstruction.info\/Fabrication\" target=\"_blank\">fabricating<\/a>, supplying and erecting the steelwork for the project, which is scheduled for an August 2016 completion.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A steel frame designed specifically to withstand a blast scenario is taking shape at the INEOS petrochemical facility at Grangemouth in Scotland.
