{"id":18944,"date":"2015-01-07T15:05:58","date_gmt":"2015-01-07T15:05:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.newsteelconstruction.com\/wp\/?p=18944"},"modified":"2015-01-08T12:35:01","modified_gmt":"2015-01-08T12:35:01","slug":"northamptons-20m-station-to-open-on-monday","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsteelconstruction.com\/wp\/northamptons-20m-station-to-open-on-monday\/","title":{"rendered":"Northampton\u2019s \u00a320M station to open on Monday"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.newsteelconstruction.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/northampton1sept14.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-18388 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/www.newsteelconstruction.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/northampton1sept14.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"424\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.newsteelconstruction.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/northampton1sept14.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.newsteelconstruction.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/northampton1sept14-300x212.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Northampton\u2019s new <a href=\"http:\/\/www.steelconstruction.info\/Braced_frames\" target=\"_blank\">steel framed<\/a> railway station building will open on Monday next week in time for the first service to London at 4.15am.<\/p>\n<p>The new \u00a320M railway station building is a 2,500m\u00b2 structure,\u00a0 twice the size of the old station, designed to meet the growing number of commuters and visitors travelling to and from the town.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe project was always going to be a steel framed structure for efficiency,\u201d said Jacobs Project Engineer Rob Hazell. \u201dThe main challenge was fitting the station into its footprint which is bounded by railway lines and a main road on two elevations. This resulted in the building\u2019s rhomboid shape and the irregular <a href=\"http:\/\/www.steelconstruction.info\/Concept_design#Floor_grids\" target=\"_blank\">grid pattern<\/a> of the steelwork.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.steelconstruction.info\/Long-span_beams\" target=\"_blank\">Long clear spans<\/a> for the entrance and concourse areas were also an important consideration and another reason for using steel.<\/p>\n<p>The ground floor of the building accommodates the main entrance from the drop off point and taxi rank, back-of-house facilities, ticket machines, retail zones all arranged around a 15m wide foyer.<\/p>\n<p>Lifts and a main staircase give access up to the first floor, which contains another entrance from the adjacent road bridge, the main ticket office, more retail outlets, and access to all five platforms via the new footbridge and gateline.<\/p>\n<p>Working on behalf of main contractor Buckingham Group Contracting, Billington Structures <a href=\"http:\/\/www.steelconstruction.info\/Fabrication\" target=\"_blank\">fabricated<\/a>, supplied and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.steelconstruction.info\/Construction#Steel_erection\" target=\"_blank\">erected<\/a> 230t of steel for the project.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Northampton\u2019s new steel framed railway station building will open on Monday next week in time for the first service to London at 4.15am.
