Work set for Oldham Prince’s Gate development

Posted on by in Weekly News

Oldham160505Demolition work is under way and the main construction programme is set to begin soon on Oldham Council’s Prince’s Gate retail project at the Mumps development.

Council bosses want to regenerate the area as an Eastern Gateway shopping centre around the new Metrolink station, as part of wider plans for the town centre.

Jim McMahon, Oldham Council Leader, said: “Prince’s Gate at Oldham Mumps is all about our aspirations for the future – it is a game changer for the new Oldham and one of the most ambitious redevelopments for our town centre since the 1980s.”

The project will include:

  • 13,900m² of retail space to be built on the current Park and Ride site.
  • A stunning glazed retail development with a new Marks & Spencer food and clothing store, plus underground car parking spaces.
  • 800 quality homes – including apartments and a total of around 700 car parking spaces.
  • Refurbishment of the former Nat West bank building to include apartments, retail and leisure units.
  • A replacement Park and Ride facility on the opposite side of the road on land between Beaver Street and Wallshaw Street
  • A new retail/residential unit on the RSPCA/Roscoe Mill site hosting a major supermarket tenant with 50 apartments above across three storeys.

The centrepiece of the glazed building complex with undulating roof is a Marks & Spencer store, plus underground car parking spaces.

The Eastern Gateway site masterplan also allows for 800 homes in a new neighbourhood with associated retail and leisure uses.

These include a separate discount food store with apartments above, improved public realm, walking and cycling links, plus a modern use for the refurbished and extended Grade II–listed Old Bank building.

WYG Engineering is the structural consultant for the job, which has been designed by Wakefield-based Harris Partnership.
