Wigan gets a big lift

Posted on by in News

A 1,000t capacity crane lifts a 40m-long truss into place on the Wigan Life Centre project, a scheme which will ultimately bring much needed employment and investment into the town.

Weighing 53t, the truss will support two floors and the roof above the centre’s new 25m long swimming pool. Steelwork contractor Elland Steel brought the truss to site in sections, assembling it on the ground, prior to the lift which took approximately 10 hours to complete.

The multi-million pound PFI scheme will create a state-of-the-art leisure, health, learning and information complex spread across two sites. Facilities also include a learning pool with a moveable floor, a fitness centre, open plan offices, three libraries and a ‘one-stop shop’ for health, social care, council services and community associations.

Working on behalf of main contractor Morgan Ashurst, Elland Steel will eventually erect 2,500t of structural steelwork for the project’s two sites.
