Steel hits the right note for Halle orchestra’s extension

Manchester’s famous Hallé St Peter’s orchestra is constructing a new three-storey steel-framed extension to its Ancoats home.

To be known as The Oglesby Centre at Hallé St Peter’s, the building will provide much needed additional facilities including a café and kitchen, large new rehearsal space, education workshop facilities, individual practice spaces, and improved facilities for the musicians and choirs.

Hallé St Peter’s success in attracting a wide range of events – from conferences and weddings to workshops and television appearances is said to have helped Ancoats become a significant leisure and business destination.

Rob Smith, Director HH Smith & Sons, the project’s main contractor, said: “We are thrilled to have been appointed to construct this prestigious and exceptional building for the Hallé.

“The Hallé’s commitment to investing in the heart of Ancoats and providing this inspirational facility is to be applauded. Future generations of talent will be nurtured and we’re proud to be playing a pivotal role in that process.”

The redevelopment has been designed by Stephenson Studio Architects, with Mace working as project manager and BD Structures contracted as steelwork contractor. The overall scheme is set for completion by autumn 2019.
