Mega Amazon warehouse nears completion

Bardon-amazon160825Measuring more than 500m in length and 180m wide, a giant distribution centre for online retailer Amazon is nearing completion at the Mountpark Bardon Distribution Centre near Coalville in Leicestershire.

Working on behalf of main contractor Winvic Construction, Caunton Engineering has erected 2,750t of steelwork for the project, which is scheduled to be completed by October.

The structure is a large portal frame consisting of six spans. The two outer spans are 35m-wide, while the inner four spans measure 28.5m wide.

Perimeter columns are large 914 UB sections, set at 8.5m centres. Internally the columns are all bespoke members fabricated from plate. Arranged in a hit and miss configuration throughout the structure, thereby creating more column-free space within the building, the columns measure 650mm deep x 400mm wide, with 25mm flanges.

For the erection programme Caunton used four 50t-capacity mobile cranes in conjunction with a variety of MEWPs.

Winvic and Caunton are also currently working on a second smaller distribution centre on an adjacent plot.

This portal-framed structure has a similar design to its larger neighbour, although it is only half the size of the Amazon warehouse offering 315,000 square feet of warehouse and office space.

Aiming for a BREEAM “Very Good’ rating unit two is scheduled to be completed by the end of the year, by which time a third distribution centre should be underway.
