Galvanizing Awards highlight cutting edge innovation

Posted on by in Weekly News

Five projects, including the Greenwich Low Carbon Energy Centre were winners at this year’s Galvanizing Awards ceremony held at London’s Royal Aeronautical Society.

The Greenwich facility by CF Moller Architects with steelwork erected by Billington Structures, won the Galvanizing in Architecture Award.

It is the largest new build residential heat network in Europe, saving over 200,000t of carbon every year. The 3,000m² centre, situated in a prominent location adjacent to the Blackwall Tunnel Approach, is a highly visible and important landmark.

Designed by British artist Conrad Shawcross, the judges said the project’s 49m-high stack tower unites sophisticated engineering and complex optic research to create an impressive sculptural concept on a huge scale.

The structure is 20m-wide and 3m-deep and is constructed from five interconnected galvanized steel ladder frames that are clad with perforated aluminium panels, each the size of a London bus.

The other winning projects were Hastings Pier; Snug Architects’ Milford-on-Sea beach huts; the Sainsbury Wellcome Centre London by Ian Ritchie Architects; and Global Rail Construction’s Crossrail West Gantries.
